Launching a National Pilot to Transform Maternal Health in Guatemala

Phalarope, in collaboration with Rotary International, UNFPA, the Ministry of Health, and the Municipality of Camotán, is proud to launch a national pilot program in Chiquimula, Guatemala. This initiative will strengthen maternal and newborn care through innovative, community-led solutions designed to reduce preventable deaths and improve health outcomes for women and children.

A Collaborative Effort
This pilot is made possible through the joint efforts of:

  • Rotary International (led by the Perry Rotary Club and Del Valle Guatemala Rotary Club)

  • Phalarope

  • UNFPA

  • DRISS Chiquimula (Dirección de Redes Integrales de Servicios de Salud, Ministerio de Salud)

  • Municipalidad de Camotán

Powered by Global Grants
The initiative is financed by Rotary International through Global Grants, building on proven models:

  • In Guatemala, Phalarope has worked in 33 communities in Chimaltenango—20 of which were funded through Rotary Global Grants.

  • In Panama, the program began in 6 communities and is now expanding to 18 through additional Rotary Global Grants.

What the Pilot Will Do
The pilot will focus on:

  • Strengthening follow-up for pregnant and postpartum women

  • Early identification of high-risk pregnancies

  • Deploying care navigators through maternal and child health workers and traditional midwives to coordinate care

  • Organizing home visits using ArcGIS for real-time tracking and management

  • Improving communication between rural communities and referral-level health services

A Vision for the Future
Together, we are building a more connected, equitable, and dignified maternal health system for Guatemala—and creating a model that can be adapted to other countries.
